Over the past few years, crossfit has become popular and has helped many individuals build up their strength and confidence. But have you ever thought about the pros and cons of crossfit?
What is Crossfit:
Crossfit is high intensity exercises in small intervals that help build endurance, mobility, and flexibility. Many people enjoy crossfit for the short 20 to 30 minute workout and the community around it. If you are up to the challenge, crossfit training can be very beneficial for the following reasons:
If your goal is to lose weight, gain muscle, and/or maintain current fitness levels, then crossfit will help you reach it. Through the “Work out of the Day” (WOD) that is consisted of high intensity interval training (HIIT) such as, deadlifts, pull-ups, overhead press, box jumps, and push-ups, one can improve on muscle strength and cardiovascular endurance.
If you are the type of person that needs the motivation and extra push, then crossfit is for you. When you attend a crossfit gym, you are stepping into a community of highly motivated individuals that will help you reach your goals through their support and encouragement.
However, every pro also has its cons. Some of the downsides of crossfit are the following:
There is a lack of personalization when it comes to the WOD. Crossfit is inconsistent when it comes to planning a workout for the different levels of crossfit trainees.
Because of the lack of individualization, there tends to be more injuries. Most people who go to a crossfit class for the first time do not know what is their limit and because of this they tend to get injured. Also, sometimes because of the high intensity workouts, adrenaline, and competition, people tend to get injured because they want to keep on pushing towards the finish line.
When choosing the right crossfit training facility for you, keep the following questions in mind:
- Did the trainer have you complete a fitness test? A fitness test will determine your ability to perform the exercises that will be required.
- Does the crossfit gym offer a beginners course? Not everyone can do the same exercises and not everyone is at the same level of strength. Most of the WOD involves olympic lifts, which can be challenging. If a gym offers a beginners course, the trainers will be able to teach the new students these lifts and help them build up their endurance.
If you are up for the challenge then you should most definitely try crossfit. However, make sure you are cautious when choosing a location. Pushing your body can be beneficial, but do not do anything you are not comfortable with!
