Healthy Snacks For Those Netflix Nights

pathmedical Nutrition

After binge-watching on Netflix until 2 a.m., it’s usually normal to get a little hungry from time to time.  The problem with late snacking is people aren’t as active as they are during the day, and the regular midnight snacks tend to be ice cream, candy and more.  Or it may be a glass or two of wine.  Although it’s a natural craving, there are some better alternatives to fill that belly and satisfy your hunger needs without turning to sugar and carbs.

Kiwi: Kiwis are a light snack that’s rich in vitamin C. You can enjoy two peeled kiwis and only consume 93 calories. They’re also a natural source of serotonin, which promotes relaxation and helps curb your appetite.

Pistachios: Pistachios have a high level of sleep promoting melatonin. A handful of pistachios comes in at only 160 calories and contains 6.5 mg of melatonin.

Chicken or Turkey Breasts: Build up on protein with a few turkey slices from the fridge. Poultry also contains tryptophan to help you fall asleep. A few slices go well with a little ranch dressing, or use them to make a light sandwich with whole grain bread or a tortilla wrap.

Whole Grain Wrap: A small, whole-grain tortilla wrap comes in at only 94 calories. Just add nutritious toppings or fillings, such as hummus and leftover chicken breast, and enjoy.

Milk and Yogurt: When you were younger, did your parent give you a glass of milk before bed? That’s probably because it works:  milk makes you feel full and satiated – giving you a sense of drowsiness before bed. It’s the same with yogurt. Yogurt has plenty of nutrients to keep your body happy, and the calcium contains is one of the functional nutrients that can improve the quality of your sleep. It also has protein and probiotics that can help aid your digestive system.

These suggestions don’t have to be for midnight only. If your goal this summer is to shed some pounds, but don’t know what to munch on for your cravings, you can try these snacks. Yes, these foods do help you fall asleep but in other terms, it can empower your body to get up and move. Therefore, it keeps your body happy and healthy while you shed some pounds and make you feel more confident for being in the body that you are in.
